Lewis Hamilton once aimed a blistering response to those who criticised his move to Monaco, with former boxer also targeting the legend with a jibe over his tax affairs. Monaco is back in the spotlight this weekend as the small Principality gears up to host the .

will be in this time around for the iconic race, yet it's a track, and a region, he knows very well. The seven-time World Champion moved out of the UK to Luins Vaud in Switzerland back in 2007.

Hamilton has been criticised heavily in the past for reportedly 'not paying taxes in the UK' due to him predominantly residing in Monaco. But he has previously defended himself.

“What people don’t realise is that I pay tax here [in the UK], but I don’t earn all my money here," Hamilton said to The Sunday Times back in 2014.

“I race in 19 different countries, so I earn my money in 20 different places and I pay tax in several different places, and I pay a lot here as well. I am contributing to the country and, not only that, I help keep a team of more than 1,000 people employed."

Fury was not convinced, however. Speaking in 2021, the former heavyweight icon said: "Unlike , I live and pay taxes which went up to £9million last year."

Despite the dig aimed at Hamilton, HMRC statistics, published in 2019, put Hamilton among the top 5,000 highest tax payers in the UK – despite living abroad for the majority of his racing career.

There are a host of F1 drivers that currently live in Monaco, as the country does not impose any tax on the personal income of the residents. Some consider this to be a form of tax evasion.

Primarily, Hamilton resides in a stunning £11.8m mansion in Monaco. His residence means he often rubs shoulders with the likes of Alex Albon, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Nico Hulkenberg and Lando Norris, who all reportedly maintain property in the micro-state.

McLaren star wasn't afraid to admit the reason behind his controversial relocation to Monaco in 2021 was for the money. "I'm moving to Monaco after [the final race in] Abu Dhabi for the reasons you probably expect," he said.

"It's something that obviously a lot of drivers go to do. Of course I'll understand and there's going to be some [criticism] for sure. People do many things in life for money. This is just another one."

Yet despite the controversy, all eyes will be on Hamilton this weekend. The Brit arrived in Monte Carlo this week on the back of after he bagged fourth place in Imola, Italy.

"I don't know if I'll sleep tonight, I'm really, really buzzing and really excited." he said. Regarding his strong race in Imola, he added: "We've definitely taken on the positives from it. There's still a lot to digest – it's only been a few days, obviously."
