Winning the brings with it a wealth of bonuses. Drivers pick up a winner's ring that took even by surprise, and their face is eternally engraved on the legendary Borg Warner Trophy. There's even a glass of milk to drink - or pour over your head, your choice! However, tradition isn't the only thing on the line on Sunday.

Along with the wealth of traditions, the Indy 500 offers up a mouth-watering prize pot. Here are the financial details for the greatest spectacle in racing.

How much does the Indy 500 winner get?

The current prize pool for 2025 has yet to be revealed to the public, but fans can look at last year's purse for guidance.

The 108th running of the Indy 500 had a record-breaking prize pool of £13.8million ($18,456,000), split between the 33 drivers who made the field. Josef Newgarden pipped Pato O'Ward to victory with a sensational last-lap pass, which turned out to be worth £3.2m ($4,288,000).

Newgarden's victory was his second in as many years, meaning the Nashville-born racer has earned a combined £5.9m ($7,954,000) for his two Indy 500 triumphs. However, the prizes are significant throughout the field, too.

Marcus Ericsson, who enjoyed victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2022 with a £2.3m (£3.1m) prize, was classified 33rd and last in 2024 after crashing out on the opening lap. Despite this, he still picked up £379,600 ($507,500) for his efforts.

It is reasonable to assume that the 2025 victor will receive the biggest prize pot in history. With Fox Sports on board in broadcast capacity and the grandstands on the brink of a sell-out, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be teeming with life on Sunday for the 109th running of motorsport's greatest event.

2025 Indy 500 starting grid

Former Ferrari junior driver Robert Shwartzman will start on pole position after becoming the first rookie to earn the P1 award in 43 years. He will be joined by two-time winner Takuma Sato and last year's runner-up, O'Ward, on the front row.

Back-to-back Indy 500 winner Newgarden starts 11th after both he and Team Penske team-mate Will Power were pulled out of the fast-12 for technical infringements. He is looking to become the first ever to win the race three times in a row.

Current championship leader Alex Palou starts sixth as he goes in search of his first oval victory after winning four of the opening five races of the season. Helio Castroneves is chasing a record-breaking fifth win at the Speedway, but will start down in 24th.
