Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) executed extensive raids at the home of a well-known doctor in Burdwan, located in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal.

These operations commenced around midnight on Saturday and extended into the early hours of Sunday. According to insiders, significant amounts of unaccounted cash, along with gold and diamond jewelry, were discovered at the property.

The physician in question, Tapan Kumar Jana, who is affiliated with Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, was reportedly absent during the raids.

His spouse, Sushmita Jana, also a physician at a medical institution in Kolkata, informed CBI agents that her husband was on duty at the hospital in Murshidabad.

In addition to the cash and jewelry, CBI officials confiscated a computer hard drive and various documents from the residence.

The CBI's actions were carried out in strict adherence to protocol, with officials first notifying the local police station before initiating the raids.

A team of eight CBI agents was involved in the operation.

The investigation into potential human organ trafficking within medical facilities in West Bengal gained traction following inquiries by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into financial misconduct at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where a tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a female doctor occurred last August.

One of the key allegations against the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, involves his purported role in the illicit sale of organs from unidentified bodies that arrived at the hospital morgue for autopsy, sold at inflated prices. Ghosh is currently in judicial custody.
