Senior Citizen Free Travel: This is a news that will bring a smile on the faces of crores of elderly people of the country! The central government has given the historic gift of free travel to senior citizens aged 60 years or above. Under this scheme, which will come into effect from June 15, 2025, the elderly will now be able to travel free in trains, state buses and some domestic flights. This decision is no less than a boon for the elderly living on limited income after retirement. Now they will be able to fulfill their dream of meeting their children, going on a pilgrimage or touring the country without any financial burden.
In which means will free travel be available?
Railways: Absolutely free tickets in general and sleeper class. No ticket money, no charge!
State Transport Buses: Free travel facility in all local and intercity government buses.
Domestic flights: Free or discounted tickets will be available on select government and budget airlines, especially on religious and essential routes.
Who can avail the benefit of this scheme?
Age should be 60 years or above. Only Indian citizens will be eligible. Aadhar card, pension book or senior citizen ID will be required for identification. Both husband and wife (if both are 60+) will get separate benefits. Every senior citizen will be allowed 4 free travels every month.
How will the booking be done?
Railway Ticket: Select “Senior Citizen Scheme” option on IRCTC website/app. Age will be verified through Aadhaar.
Bus Ticket: Free tickets can be purchased by showing Aadhar card at the bus stand.
Flight tickets: Select “Senior Travel Scheme” on the airlines website. Mobile OTP will be required – Seniors must take help from family in this process.
What will be the benefits of this scheme?
The dream of travelling without financial constraints will come true. It will be easy to meet children and relatives. It will be easy to participate in pilgrimages and religious events. Mental health and self-esteem will improve. It will become a means of making the society sensitive and aware towards the elderly.
The scheme will come into effect from June 15, 2025. Flight seats may be limited – book in advance, it will be mandatory to carry ID card during the journey.
