The combination of heat waves with humid heat is becoming a major threat to people. Scientists have warned that due to constantly changing weather and climate change, the incidence of humid heatwaves, especially in tropical areas, is not only increasing but also becoming more dangerous. It is proving to be fatal, especially for the poor, rural, and working-class communities. This information has come to light in research published in the journal Nature Communications.

The increasing threat of heat wave

The research says that humid heat and heat waves are a growing threat to the health of animals along people. The recent rains and moisture present in the soil are making the humid heat wave more dangerous. There is much research about dry heat waves, but very little is known about the meteorological causes of extreme humid heat. When the temperature is very high and there is also high humidity in the atmosphere, then the body is unable to cool itself by sweating. This usually happens in the humid heat.

Scientists have found that when the “wet-bulb temperature” (a temperature that indicates how much the body can cool down through sweating) reaches 35 degrees Celsius, the human body is unable to keep itself cool. In such a situation, a person has to suffer huge physical and mental damage.

Serious effects…confusion, unconsciousness, and even risk to life

Scientists have found that humid heat and heat waves disrupt the body's temperature control. This can lead to confusion, unconsciousness, muscle damage, failure of major organs, and even death. Humid heat is also related to temperature stress, which occurs when environmental conditions affect the body's ability to cool itself. Extreme heat stress causes the body temperature to rise by three degrees Celsius or more and causes loss of physical consciousness. If not treated immediately, the victim can go into a state of unconsciousness and even die.
