Incident at Ambedkar Chowk

In Hoshiarpur, Punjab, a man was apprehended on Sunday for allegedly spitting on the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, making derogatory remarks, and attempting to damage a replica of the Constitution nearby. Police confirmed the arrest and reported that the incident took place near the bus stand at Ambedkar Chowk.

According to the police, a case has been registered following the incident. The accused, identified as Jagdeep Singh Matharu, also known as Deepak, reportedly ascended the steps leading to the statue while wrapping a cloth around his head.

The First Information Report (FIR) states that Matharu allegedly spat on the statue multiple times, shouted that he intended to break it, and claimed he did not recognize Dr. Ambedkar or the Constitution.

Witnesses nearby were alerted by his actions and intervened before he could cause any damage to the statue. Sub-Inspector Gursahib Singh from the Model Town police station confirmed the arrest, noting that the FIR was filed based on a complaint from Sukhdev Singh, the secretary of the Punjab unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
