Bengaluru: In a welcome move for bus passengers, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will soon introduce a mobile app that allows commuters to track buses in real-time and view seat availability. The app is expected to be operational within the next 4-5 months.
The initiative will not be limited to premium services like Airavat, Ambari, and Pallakki. It will also include information on regular and rural service buses. Through the app, commuters will be able to check the exact location of any KSRTC bus and how many seats are vacant, enabling them to plan their journeys accordingly.
To facilitate this, KSRTC is implementing a Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS), for which tenders have already been invited. If all goes according to plan, the app will be available by August or September, modeled on a similar initiative by the Union Railway Ministry.
Enhancing safety and fuel efficiency
What is VTMS?
VTMS uses GPS-based technology to track the movement of buses across different routes. Each bus will have a GPRS unit installed, allowing passengers to receive real-time information. By entering the bus registration number or trip code on the mobile app, passengers can access its current location and seat availability.
VTMS to cover 8,800 buses
A total of 8,800 KSRTC buses, both with and without advance reservation services, will be brought under VTMS. This includes buses operating in urban and rural areas. Of these, 1,400 newly introduced buses already have the tracking devices installed and will be synced with the app.
The remaining buses will be fitted with the system over the next few months. Additionally, these buses will feature emergency alert buttons (panic buttons), and each will transmit real-time location updates to the central monitoring system.
“KSRTC has always been at the forefront of adopting new technology and enhancing passenger safety. The VTMS system is an extension of that commitment. Passengers will benefit from timely updates, making their travel more convenient,” said Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
