The Punjab Kings are set to face a significant challenge as spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to miss the IPL 2025 game against the Mumbai Indians due to a wrist injury.
The development follow his absence in the team’s recent match against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur, where it was reported he had a ‘small niggle’.
The PBKS’ spin-bowling coach had previously indicated Chahal was dealing with a niggle, which has now been clarified as a wrist injury.
It is clear that PBKS are opting not to risk Chahal’s further involvement at this stage, prioritising his recovery as the side has already qualified for the playoffs.
Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the team has won 8 out of 13 games and is currently in the top two position with 17 points.
If Mumbai claim victory against Punjab, they will move to the top two leaving Punjab to complete the league stages in third or fourth position.
In Chahal’s absence, Praveen Dubey, a Karnataka players was brought in to play his fifth IPL match, making his debut for the Punjab Kings against the Delhi Capitals.
Praven Dubey who bowled couple of overs, conceded 20 runs and picked one wicket in the losing cause against Delhi.
Meanwhile, PBKS bowling department has suffered another major blow with the departure of Marco Jansen, who has been named in the South Africa squad for WTC final which is set to be played on June.
PBKS Head coach Ricky Ponting expressed his sentiments in a now-deleted video, stating, “One of our boys is leaving us tomorrow. Marco Jansen is off to the World Test Championship. Been a big part of our success up until here. You’ll be sadly missed. We’ve loved having you here mate.”
The upcoming clash between PBKS and MI hold significant importance with both franchises aiming to finish in the top two of the IPL 2025 points table. Meanwhile Gujarat Titans has lost twice, while PBKS and RCB has also suffered a defeat which still keeps the race for the top top position.
