The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has made unconditional offers of admission to foreign students studying at or accepted at Harvard University. The action follows heightened tensions between Harvard and the US government that plunged the fate of foreign students in the Ivy League school into doubt.
In a social media post, HKUST reaffirmed its dedication to international academic cooperation with the following statement: "In response to global academic changes, HKUST is issuing an open invitation to international students who are presently studying at, or have confirmed offers from, Harvard University to continue pursuing their studies with us."
HKUST stated that it is ready to facilitate a seamless transition for affected students through the acceptance of their academic credits, expedited admissions, and full support services, such as accommodation and visa arrangements.
“Diversity fuels creativity and progress,” said Professor Guo Yike, Provost of HKUST. "We are ready to host Harvard students in our community, providing them with the materials and lively atmosphere required to excel in their respective areas."
The unexpected move lies in the heightened tension between Harvard and US government agencies, which has led to legal proceedings. Harvard is suing the US government, claiming its recent actions jeopardise the academic careers of thousands of foreign students.
It is the university's contention that the government's effort to take away Harvard's right to admit these students is a "blatant violation" of constitutional norms and would essentially remove nearly 25% of its student population.
The university has established a special support channel at hkust-Harvard@ust.hk to address queries from interested students and guide them through the transition process.
