Pune is set to get a major infrastructure boost with the construction of five new flyovers aimed at easing traffic congestion across key junctions in the city. These projects, worth a total of Rs. 548 crore, are expected to be operational within the next year.

The proposed flyovers and their estimated costs are as follows:

Once completed, these flyovers are expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve traffic movement, and enhance connectivity in Pune.

Details of the Five Flyovers:

Katraj Chowk – Rs. 269 crore
One of the biggest projects, this flyover is expected to ease traffic bottlenecks. However, the project has already seen delays, and authorities have granted an extension due to its scale and complexity.

University Junction – Rs. 250 crore

A key junction for daily commuters, one carriageway of this flyover is expected to open by June, giving partial relief to traffic. Currently, 85% of the work is complete.

Sinhagad Road – Rs. 40 crore
Aiming to resolve bottlenecks near the Sinhagad Road area, this project’s completion deadline is June 15. Citizens are hopeful the timeline will be met.

Vishrantwadi (Ambedkar Chowk) – Rs. 51 crore
Despite difficult terrain and earlier delays, 60% of the work has been completed in the past 10 months. The flyover will benefit daily commuters significantly once ready.

Ghorpadi Village—Rs. 37 crore
This flyover will help decongest internal traffic and revive halted bus services. Currently, 40% of the construction is complete.

Other Highlights:

  • Dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists are part of the design in some locations.

  • Over 11,000 vehicles are expected to benefit daily from reduced congestion.

  • Traffic diversions and temporary inconvenience will be managed with proper planning.

Authorities hope these flyovers will transform Pune’s road infrastructure and significantly improve traffic flow by mid-2026.

Officials claimed that this project is also challenging because of land acquisition delays in some areas. "Traffic management during construction will be a major concern for citizens. The rains may also slow down progress temporarily," he added.

The new flyover project is expected to have dedicated footpaths and cycle tracks. It will also have better safety measures for pedestrians and school children. The flyovers will ease the traffic and also reduce commute times for residents.

10 double decker flyover

Additionally, PMC has proposed constructing ten double-decker flyovers across the city. These structures are designed with a lower deck for vehicular traffic and an upper deck for metro rail, optimizing urban space utilization. This initiative follows the successful implementation of similar projects at Nal Stop on Karve Road and near Savitribai Phule Pune University on Ganeshkhind Road.

The proposed locations for these flyovers include Mundhwa Mahatma Phule Chowk, Kalubai Chowk on Solapur Road, Dandekar Pul Chowk, Wagholi Awhalwadi Chowk, Ambedkar Chowk in Warje, Kothrud Bus Depot (Bhusari Colony), Golibar Maidan Chowk, Viman Nagar Chowk, Wanowrie Fatimanagar Chowk, and Ravidarshan in Manjari. PMC estimates the construction costs for the vehicular decks at ₹60 crore for the Mundhwa bridge, ₹35 crore for Kalubai Chowk, and ₹45 crore for Dandekar Pul Chowk.

PMC will collaborate with metro development agencies, such as Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), to execute these projects. Under this partnership, PMC will finance the lower vehicular decks, while the metro agencies will fund the upper metro decks. This integrated approach aims to maximize the utility of limited urban road corridors, especially where elevated metro routes restrict the feasibility of additional infrastructure like flyovers or underpasses.
