News India Live, Digital Desk: The Central Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in 11 districts of Kerala as heavy rains continue in the state. This alert is for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod, where extremely heavy rain is expected. Orange alert has also been released for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha, which shows the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Given the bad weather 10 Districts have been declared a holiday in all educational institutions including schools, colleges and tuition centers: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod. District collectors have directed that no special or private classes should be conducted today.
The government has advised the residents of landslide-prone and flood affected hilly areas to be transferred to safe areas as a precaution due to heavy rains. People living in low -lying areas, where there is a possibility of waterlogging, is urged to go to relief camps after assessing local conditions. In addition, those living in houses with structurally weak or bad ceilings should be particularly cautious due to the risk of strong winds.
The authorities have urged the residents that if they are expected to have any danger, they should take immediate action and contact the local authorities to help to move to safe areas.
In the districts where red and orange alerts are applicable, advance preparations are underway to set up relief camps. Details of buildings designated as relief camps by the concerned revenue and local administration, along with safe access routes, will be informed prematurely.
Amid heavy rains in the hilly areas of Kozhikode district, nine families of Manjacheli of villagers have been transferred to safe places. The group consists of 13 men, 12 females and 11 children, who have been taken to a relief camp set up at St. George High School in Parlanded. It is noteworthy that Manjali was one of the badly affected areas of landslides on 31 July 2024, on the same day landslides occurred in the neighboring Wayanad’s Mundakkai and Churalamala.
In view of the current threat of the weather, most of the gram panchayats in Wayanad district have set up 24 -hour control papers and all tourist destinations in the Red Alert Zone have been temporarily closed. District Collector DR Meghshree has urged people to avoid non-essential travels and to take extreme care while traveling from hilly areas, especially in emergency state.
