In Thane city, Maharashtra, a section of a derelict structure that the municipal authorities deemed hazardous fell in the early hours of Tuesday, according to news agency PTI.
According to the official, after the incident at the Nandadeep building in the Wagle Estate area at approximately 2.25 am, up to 17 households were evacuated and relocated to a safer region, as reported by PTI.
Following a study this year, the Thane Municipal Corporation placed the building—which was over 50 years old—under the C2B category of unsafe structures, according to Yasin Tadvi, head of the disaster management unit, as reported by PTI.
According to him, the third-floor stair gallery and a portion of the roof fell, but no one was hurt.
According to Tadvi, the building was evacuated as a precaution after all required personnel hurried to the scene.
According to PTI, he stated that the occupants of the two nearby buildings have also been ordered to temporarily leave and find other housing.
4,407 buildings have been deemed unsafe, with the Mumbra region housing the highest 1,343 structures, according to statistics released by the city authorities.
Another instance occurred Monday in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, when a four-story building’s ceiling plaster fell, killing a 35-year-old lady and injuring her 7-month-old kid, according to an official, as reported by PTI.
The pre-monsoon rains in the area are said to be the cause of the tragedy, which happened at 12.30 pm at Pooja Apartment in Gopcharpada in Virar East, on the outskirts of Mumbai, according to PTI.
When the plaster collapsed, victim Lakshmi Singh was with her three-year-old and seven-month-old children. While receiving treatment at a private hospital, she suffered brain injuries and passed away. According to the source, the children suffered minor wounds, PTI said.
Action has been taken by the municipal corporation against the building, which was constructed in 2014 and has around fifty apartments. According to Assistant Commissioner Gilson Gonsalves, it has previously been notified of structural audits.
This is the second pre-monsoon rain-related death in the region. A guy in Sandor was electrocuted on Friday after coming into touch with a live wire.
