Morgan Rogers thought he had broken the deadlock when he scored for Aston Villa in the Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday.

The 22-year-old though he had found the net when he beat United’s goalkeeper Altay Bayındır in the 74th minute. However, the referee disallowed eventually.

Why was the goal disallowed?

The goal was disallowed because the referee penalised Rogers for kicking the ball out of the gloves of the United goalkeeper, which was a foul.

According to Law 12 of the Game 2024-25, set by the International Football Association Board, a goal is chalked off if there was a foul in the build-up. And that led to the opening goal of the match being disallowed.

The decision not only left manager Unai Emery furious but also rubbed salt in Villa’s wounds after United struck twice, off Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen, to take a healthy lead in their final match of the Premier League this season.
