Netflix is informing its users about the big change and asking them to upgrade.

Netflix is ending support for the old-gen Fire TV stick and other devices from June 2025. The platform is informing the eligible users via an email alert in the US and reports say the people are being suggested to upgrade/buy the latest Fire TV devices to continue using Netflix on their big screens. The news will mostly apply to those using the first-gen Fire TV devices, as confirmed by the company via a quote to The Verge this week.

Netflix Shutting Down, But Why?

The fact that Netflix will stop working on the oldest Fire TV stick, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote suggests the platform is now focused on upgrading the newer Fire TV models as they get support for the latest features and security patches.

It is also possible that Amazon will not offer reliable updates for these Fire TV versions, which makes them vulnerable to possible hacking threats. The development seems confined to the US for now but we expect other regions to also be notified by this Netflix update.

Amazon is aware of these changes, which is why it is offering a special discounted price on Fire TV models for the eligible consumers. It is not surprising to see Netflix pull the plug on the older devices but people ideally would expect a better way to inform them that too with a detailed reason for this decision. After all, WhatsApp regularly stops support for older Android and iOS devices, so these changes are part of the process at these companies.

In the other Amazon news, the company’s Prime Video platform had some bad news for its viewers in India. Amazon Prime users in India will start seeing ads between movies, shows and more from June 2025. The platform reached out to its subscribers in the country earlier this month, informing them about a major change to its model.

Amazon started testing this ad-tier in India last year and it will come into effect from June 17, 2025 in the country. The company says you will have the option to get the ad-free experience but for that you will need to pay extra money (over your existing Prime subscription).
