A beautiful little fishing village in Cornwall has been named the best destination for a spring staycation. Port Isaac is a charming village on the north coast of Cornwall and topped Sykes Holiday Cottage's list of the UK's top weekends away.

It is known as the filming location for the popular TV series Doc Martin. Portwenn, as it is known onscreen, offers visitors an idyllic view of the Atlantic from the whitewashed cottages that huddle together on the shore. Additionally, a sandy beach completes the trifecta that makes Port Isaac one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Things to do in the village include exploring its small, winding streets. It has one of the narrowest thoroughfares in the UK, called Squeezy Belly Alley.

A number of boat trips leave from the harbour to explore the nearby coastline, giving visitors a chance to see more of Cornwall, such as Tintagel and Boscastle.

It is also connected to the coast path in Cornwall's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Heritage Coast Area, giving beautiful walks in both directions.

Visitors have called Port Isaac "an absolute gem of a place" with fantastic scenery and views. Others say that despite its Doc Martin fame, Post Isaac has "retained much of the original charm and original buildings".

A photogenic haven, this historic village has a long history of fishing. Used as a fishing base for at least 400 years, many of the handsome houses around the harbour today date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Doc Martin fans can pick out the locations where scenes were shot, from the Doctor Ellingham's house on the west side of the harbour, to Mrs Tishell's chemist shop on Middle Street, Louisa's home on Fore Street and Bert's Restaurant.

Away from Port Isaac, nearby locations where filming has taken place include Doyden Castle on the cliffs above Port Quin. This 'folly' was built in the 1830's by a local landowner as somewhere secret to entertain his friends. It's now a holiday home.

There are also many small villages in the nearby area, foodie destination Padstow, King Arthur's castle Tintagel, surfer's haven Newquay, and other sites.

Those wishing to visit Port Isaac can travel by car or get a train to Bodmin Parkway and buses to the village via Padstow. There are a number of places to stay in Port Isaac and the surrounding area.
