The upcoming film 'Thug Life,' directed by Mani Ratnam , has found itself at the centre of controversy in Karnataka following the remarks made by lead actor Kamal Haasan at the film's recent event.
Members of pro-Kannada organisations have reportedly begun tearing down posters of the film across various parts of the state. This comes after Haasan, during the film’s audio launch in Chennai, said, “Kannada was born from Tamil,” a statement that has not gone down well with linguistic groups in Karnataka.
The members of groups like Kannada Rakshana Vedike have gone on a poster-tearing spree in Karnataka, targeting 'Thug Life' promotions. Their leader, Praveen Shetty, slammed Kamal for "insulting" Kannada and accused him of trying to profit from the state while disrespecting its culture. He warned that the film may be banned in Karnataka if the issue isn't resolved and issued a stern public caution to Kamal Haasan.
Audio launch event sets off firestorm
Held on May 24 at a private college in Chennai, the grand audio launch of 'Thug Life' featured music by A.R. Rahman and was attended by several stars. Among the surprise guests was Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar , who opened the event with a heartfelt speech, surprising fans. Kamal Haasan, who wrapped up the event, expressed affection for the Kannada actor and stated their familial connection. He added that Tamil is the root of Kannada, a comment that stirred emotions in Karnataka even though Shiva Rajkumar nodded in agreement on stage.
'Thug Life' release in jeopardy?
While the film is scheduled to release on June 5, the backlash has thrown its Karnataka release into uncertainty. Boasting of a star-studded cast including Trisha, Nassar, and Joju George , the film could face regional restrictions if protests intensify.
