As a travel blogger and cultural wanderer, my journey to Poompuhar wasn’t just about ticking a location off a map — it was about diving into one of India’s oldest and most mysterious coastal towns.

Once a flourishing port city of the ancient Chola dynasty, Poompuhar was a hub of trade, art, literature, and maritime glory. Known in Sangam literature as “Kaveri Poompattinam,” it stood as a gateway between India and the world.

According to ancient Tamil texts like Silappadikaram and Manimekalai, Poompuhar was not just a city — it was a cultural symbol, a melting pot where merchants, poets, dancers, and philosophers thrived.

But in a twist of tragic fate, much of this ancient marvel was swallowed by the sea, possibly due to a tsunami or natural erosion — making it India’s very own Atlantis.

Reaching Poompuhar is a serene journey in itself. I drove from Chidambaram, just 40 km away, taking the scenic coastal road that hugs paddy fields, mangroves, and sleepy villages.

• By Road: Well connected by buses from Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam

• Nearest Airport: Trichy (approx. 150 km)

This seven-tiered structure is a modern homage to the epic poem Silappadikaram, which narrates the tragic love story of Kannagi and Kovalan — set right here in Poompuhar.

The sculptures and murals inside bring alive episodes from Tamil epics and Sangam poetry, each floor a time capsule.

Quiet and unspoiled, Poompuhar Beach stretches for miles with dark sands and a melancholic charm. The breeze here is poetic, and the sunrise — simply cinematic.

This is not a commercial beach. Don’t expect shacks or water sports. Instead, come here for reflection, for watching fishermen cast their nets at dawn, or simply listening to the sea tell ancient tales.

Dating back to the 13th century and built by the Pandyas, this temple stands partially eroded by the sea, a stark reminder of nature’s might. Its architecture is a blend of Tamil and Chinese styles, showing the influence of maritime trade.

An underrated treasure! This small but rich museum showcases artifacts recovered from underwater explorations — pottery, coins, beads, and remnants of an ancient lifestyle lost to the tides.

Marine archaeologists have discovered remnants of an underwater city along Poompuhar’s coastline, dating back to over 2000 years. Stone wharves, submerged brick structures, and ancient anchors suggest a highly developed urban settlement — proving that Poompuhar wasn’t just folklore, but historical reality.

To stand at the shoreline and imagine an entire city once bustling under the waves… it gave me chills.

Simple and soulful, the cuisine here is a celebration of the sea:

• Nethili fry (crispy anchovies)

• Karuvadu Thokku (dry fish masala)

• And freshly tapped palm juice (padaneer) sold by the locals

Pro tip: Visit a home-style mess near the bus stand. They serve meals on banana leaves that taste like a grandmother’s blessing.

• Preserve the Silence: This isn’t a loud tourist town. It thrives in its peace. Respect the calm.

• No Littering: Poompuhar is eco-sensitive and needs more responsible tourism.

• Support Local Artisans: Shell crafts and palm leaf baskets made by local women make for beautiful souvenirs.

Poompuhar isn’t a place you visit — it’s a place you feel. Every wave carries whispers of a lost civilization, every sculpture tells a forgotten story, and every sunrise brings with it the legacy of Tamil culture.
