The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has issued a clarification regarding the case of Mayuri Jagtap-Hagwane, denying any inaction or negligence and refuting misleading reports circulating in the media.

According to Dr. Padmashree Bainaade, Member Secretary of the Commission, a complaint was received via email on November 6, 2024, from Meghraj Jagtap and Lata Jagtap. In the mail, the complainant alleged that Mayuri Jagtap, sister-in-law of the late Vaishnavi Hagwane, was facing domestic harassment.

Acting on it, the Commission directed the Senior Police Inspector of Paud Police Station to take appropriate action on November 7, 2024. Following the widely reported suicide of Vaishnavi Hagwane, allegedly due to dowry harassment, the Commission also took cognizance of the incident on May 19, 2025.

Immediate instructions were issued to Bavdhan Police for swift action, resulting in the arrest of the accused, and the matter is under investigation.

FIR details

In Mayuri Jagtap’s case, an FIR was initially filed at Paud Police Station under Sections 74, 115, 352, 296, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Later, on January 31, 2025, the case was transferred to Bavdhan Police Station as per senior officers' orders. A chargesheet (No. 102/2025) was filed in court on May 22, 2025.

Dr. Bainaade clarified that after the initial action, the complainants did not contact the Commission again to raise any dissatisfaction with the police investigation or for any further assistance.

Furthermore, the Commission is committed to offering all necessary support if the complainants seek help again. The Commission strongly refutes and condemns any misleading reports made against it based on incomplete or incorrect information.

The Commission is dedicated to justice and transparency. We urge the media to verify facts before publishing such sensitive matters.
