There has been a lot of confusion and rumors about 10 rupee coins for a long time. Many times shopkeepers refuse to accept these coins considering them fake, due to which common people have to face problems. Now the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a tough stand on this and issued a new guideline. RBI has clarified that 10 rupee coins are completely valid currency and are legally valid across the country.

Curb on misunderstandings spread on 10 rupee coins

According to RBI, till now 10 rupee coins have been issued in 14 different designs, all of which are valid. No person, shopkeeper or institution has the right to refuse to accept them. Legal action can also be taken against them for doing so.

How to identify real and fake 10 rupee coin?

1. Design and engraving

One side of the coin has the Ashoka Pillar and "Bharat" and "India" written below it.

The other side has "₹10" inscribed on it, along with a symbol—such as a lotus flower or other design.

The edges have fine ridges (ridged edges). Fake coins may have faded engravings or spelling mistakes.

2. Metal and colour

A genuine Rs 10 coin is bi-metallic, that is, it is made of two metals:

-Outer: aluminium-bronze

-Inner: nickel-bronze

The colour is uniform and shiny, while fake coins may have dull or uneven colours.

3. Weight and size

A genuine coin has a balanced weight, while fake coins may be heavier or lighter. There may also be slight variations in size.

4. Sound on falling

When a real coin falls on the ground, it makes a clear metallic sound. Fake coins make a hollow sound.

5. Magnetic effect

Real coins are slightly magnetic. They show a slight attraction to the magnet. Fake coins either stick or do not react at all.

If you are doubtful about the authenticity of the coin, RBI has issued a toll-free number 14440. After calling this number, a call comes automatically after a few seconds, in which all the necessary information about Rs 10 coins is given through IVR system.
