Renowned for helming films like Haiwan (1977) and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1965), veteran director Rono Mukherjee died in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 28, at the age of 83. Pawan Hans Crematorium hosted his funeral the same evening. Rono was the uncle of famous people Kajol, Rani, Tanishaa, and Ayan Mukerji. He came from the Mukherjee family, one of Bollywood’s most reputable dynasties.
Although he did not have the same level of popularity as his brothers, Rono Mukherjee did direct a few films. One of his best-known films was Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1996), starring Deb Mukherjee and Libi Rana. Rono was the film’s music director as well.
Rono Mukherjee stayed away from the spotlight while yet being connected to his brothers, relatives, and the next generation of children. His brothers were Deb Mukherjee (the father of Ayan Mukerji), Joy Mukherjee, Subbir Mukherjee, and Shomu Mukherjee (the father of Kajol and Tanishaa). He was the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee. Ram Mukherjee, the father of Rani Mukerji, was his cousin.
Numerous images and videos from Rono Mukherjee’s burial have gone viral online, showcasing the celebrities that attended as they came to offer their last condolences to the deceased. The burial was attended by cousins Tanishaa and Ayan, but Kajol was allegedly absent because of her hectic schedule promoting her most recent movie, Maa. Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who is married to Deb Mukherjee’s daughter Sunita Gowariker, was among those there.
In recent months, the family experienced yet another tragedy with the passing of Rono Mukherjee. The father of director Ayan Mukerji and Rono’s brother, Deb Mukherjee, died earlier in March at the age of 83. We regret to notify you of the loss of Mr. Debu Mukherjee, who was an actor and the main organizer of the Durga Puja in North Bombay. At the time, a family statement said, “He left us this morning.”
A key figure in the cinema business, Deb Mukherjee starred in a number of films, including Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Abhinetri, Do Aankhen, Baton Baton Mein, and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi. In addition, he produced and directed the 1983 movie Karate, which starred Yogeeta Bali, Kaajal Kiran, and Mithun Chakraborty. Son Ayan Mukerji, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and other family members came there to offer their last condolences.
