The world famous Jagannath Rath Yatra is going to start in the last week of June in 2025. This amazing journey is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, who are riding on the chariots and traveled to the city.
Every year, this festival celebrated in Ashadh month attracts not only in India, but also millions of devotees from all over the world. Lakhs of devotees reach Puri to see this journey adorned with traditions, fiction and divinity and take its merit.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra in the year 2025 will begin on 27 June (Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya) and the yatra will conclude on 5 July (Dashami Tithi). In these nine days, Puri city is immersed in devotion and gaiety, where pulling the chariots of God is considered to be the greatest virtue.
According to tradition, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra get out of the sanctum sanctorum of their temple and ride on a grand chariot and reach the Gundicha temple while visiting the city, which is considered to be their aunt’s home. There they rest for seven days and then return to Srimandir.
Many sacred rituals are concluded before the Rath Yatra, the main Sahastra Snan. This ritual takes place on Jyeshtha Purnima, in which Gods are bathed with 108 urns. After this, they have fever and they go into an unknown (Anasara) for 14 days, where they rest and are not available for darshan.
According to the Padma Purana, once mother Subhadra expressed his desire to visit Puri Nagar from Lord Jagannath. On this, God rode on a chariot with Balabhadra and Subhadra and visited the city and stayed in aunt’s house (Gundicha temple). Since then this tradition has been going on and today this festival has become a global spiritual Mahakumbh.
This journey has a very intensive religious significance. It is believed that during the Rath Yatra, all sins are cut off from the sight of Lord Jagannath and attain salvation. The devotees who draw the chariot get special virtue and they are considered to be an exclusive devotee of God.
