Fish and chips is an iconic revered around the world. But what was once a reliably cheap treat, has become an expensive luxury over recent decades.
But which towns and cities have the cheapest chippies, and where are the most expensive spots? To mark National Fish & Chip Day, which is on June 6 next week, crunched the numbers to uncover the
Exeter tops the list as the priciest city to enjoy fish and chips, with an average cost of £16.55 - nearly double the price in Manchester. London follows closely behind at £16.29, proving that the capital's living costs extend to its takeaways.
The South West is clearly a luxury hot spot for chip shops, with Torquay (£15.60) and Bristol (£13.99) also featuring high on the list. Other premium-priced locations include Ipswich (£13.86), Bournemouth and Southend-on-Sea (both £13.43), and Cambridge (£13.37). Belfast rounds out the top ten with an average cost of £13.21.
"These findings highlight the impact of regional pricing on everyday favourites. Whether you're in a seaside town or a city centre, the humble fish supper isn't immune to postcode pricing," Harrison Score, Head of , said.

Manchester tops the list as the most budget-friendly spot for a portion of fish and chips, averaging just £8.94. Walsall (£9.17) and Dundee (£9.47) round out the top three, coming in second and third place, respectively.
Other affordable spots include Derby (£9.70), Bradford (£9.87) and Stoke-on-Trent (£9.88), all offering classic chippy fare for under a tenner. Scotland's second city, Glasgow, makes the list at number 10 with an average price of £10.37.
"The data shows that the North dominates the top 10 cheap eat locations for this iconic dish. It's also interesting that no seaside towns make the cut for cheaper chippys", Mr Score added.
