New Delhi: The Ministry of Communications has introduced two new digital platforms through its Department of Posts, ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’, making a major improvement in India’s postal and geospatial infrastructure. On May 27, 2025, these portals were released to help improve location information and the delivery of services across the country. This action is consistent with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which highlights why digital governance and accurate geographic data are important for improving public services.

The platforms are built to manage addresses easily and boost the effectiveness of logistics, emergency teams and the post. By setting up these systems across the country, the government hopes to identify even the most outlying areas exactly. It also helps India move toward digital empowerment by building better spatial data infrastructure.

What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN is a digital address system based on grids and location coordinates that was developed through a partnership between the Department of Posts, IIT Hyderabad, and NRSC, ISRO. Users can find specific locations on a map using the coordinates given. It includes Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), which lets both government and private companies get and make use of precise location data for better service.

How the ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ portal works

DIGIPIN will be found by either allowing the app to use the user’s location or by manually providing latitude and longitude coordinates. Since it provides more accurate location information, this portal helps with both logistics and emergency responses. DIGIPIN is open-source and may be used by any ministry, state government, institution or individual. The data and technical documentation for the platform are available on Girub for everyone to use.

Modernising postal services with ‘Know Your PIN Code’

The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal supports the DIGIPIN system by precisely providing PIN Code details according to users’ places. Using data from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), the Department of Posts has mapped the country’s postal boundaries. Users are now able to check if their PIN code is correct and give feedback to make the postal data more accurate.

A step forward in digital governance

Ms Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts, mentioned that the government was fully committed to digital change. She said that with DIGIPIN, every citizen can be found online, which will benefit service delivery in distant locations. The Department of Posts is now playing an important role in India’s digital public infrastructure because of these platforms.

The department asks citizens and developers to be active in improving these tools. The websites of both platforms provide access to them, and their purpose is to create a more efficient and inclusive addressing system in India.
