The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for filing ITR. Now you can file your Income Tax Return i.e. ITR till September 15 instead of July 31. This change has been made for the assessment year 2025-26. This will provide relief to those who do not need to get their accounts audited.

The Income Tax Department has taken this decision for some reasons. This time many changes have been made in the ITR form. The department also needs time to prepare the system and start the facilities of ITR. Therefore, the last date has been extended.

CBDT gave this information
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has stated in this regard. CBDT said, 'Given the extensive changes made in the notified ITR and the time required for the preparation of the system and release of ITR facilities for the assessment year 2025-26, the due date for filing income tax returns has been extended.' This means that there are many changes in the new ITR form and the department needs time to implement them.

Why was the decision needed?

The CBDT also said that it wants people to not face any problems in filing ITR. Therefore, it has decided to extend the last date. CBDT said, 'To make the document filing experience smooth and convenient for taxpayers, it has been decided that the last date for filing ITR which was originally 31 July has been extended to 15 September 2025.' This means that now you have more time to file ITR.

This is good news for those who had to file ITR by 31 July. Now they can file their ITR without any tension till 15 September.
