Instagram is a heavy app and drains the battery in general but Google has pointed out a major issue that is causing it more.

Google has highlighted the reason why your phone’s battery is draining fast

Android phones seeing drastic battery drain lately have finally found the reason for the issue. Google has officially laid the blame for this problem with Instagram and asked people to update to the latest version of the app to stop seeing their battery drain faster than usual. The issue seems to be limited to Pixel devices, which might have forced Google to look deep into the problem and what was causing this drain.

The company might have reached out to Instagram and informed them about the issue which is why updating the app to the latest version is pivotal for all users.

Instagram Causes Battery Drain: Here’s How

Reports say Pixel users faced the issue once they got the May 2025 update and it affected all the Pixel users from model 6 to the latest 9 series.

There has been a lot of talk about the Pixel battery swelling issue which has warranted Google to issue a free replacement for the eligible users. But even after getting a new battery many users felt their phone’s battery was running out fast.

Google observed the issues and directly pointed them towards Instagram which now seems to have fixed the issue with the latest update. Neither of the companies have shared the cause and reason for the issue but we’re just pleased that now Pixel users are not seeing a heavy battery drain on their phone.

So if you use Instagram on your phone and facing this issue, follow these steps to get the latest version of the app:

  • Long-press on Instagram app on your Pixel phone
  • Tap on the ! sign which shows App Info
  • Scroll down the screen and get the Instagram app version
  • Make sure your phone has the version 382.0.0.49.84 of Instagram installed

You can get the new update from the Play Store as well. Google and Instagram have not said if the battery drain issue is limited to the Pixel users or all the Android phone users out there.
