The weather of 31 May 2025 in Delhi will knock with many colors – sometimes thundering clouds, sometimes drizzle and somewhere hot air filled with humidity. While the temperature will give some relief, the wind speed can reach 50 km / h. The reason behind this change in weather is the pressure formed over Bangladesh and active western disturbances, which are creating a stir in the whole of North India. The highest May rain in Delhi so far has given relief from the heat, but has also created problems like traffic and waterlogging. Also, the air quality still remains poor. Amidst the scorching heat of May, the weather is now ready to take a turn. The pressure formed over Bangladesh will move towards north-northeast, due to which very heavy to extremely heavy rains will be seen in Northeast India till May 31. At the same time, an active western disturbance is moving towards north-west India, which will continue the series of thunderstorms, strong winds and rain for the next 4-5 days. This will provide some relief from the heat in many states including Delhi. Clouds will remain in the sky, and the rustle of cool breeze will dissolve in the weather. This change will not only balance the temperature, but will also give a little relief to the people struggling with the heat.
Delhi has broken all the old records of rain in May this time. So far, 186.4 mm of rain has been recorded in the capital, which is the highest rainfall ever in the month of May. Earlier in 2008, 165 mm of rain had occurred in May, which has now been left behind. It is worth noting that on an average only 30.7 mm of rain falls in May. That means this time the rain is six times more than normal. While this unusual rain has given relief from the heat on one hand, it has also created problems of waterlogging and traffic at many places. Such mood of rain in May is a new thing for the people of Delhi.
This year the southwest monsoon has surprised everyone with its speed. According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon is moving northward much faster than its normal speed. Usually the monsoon reaches Delhi around the end of June i.e. 27 June, but this time it is expected to arrive before that. Although the IMD has not yet announced any official date for the arrival of monsoon in the capital, there are indications that the weather in Delhi will change soon. Seeing this rapidly changing weather, Delhiites have started preparing for the monsoon. Heavy rain, wind and movement of clouds have told that this time the monsoon may arrive soon.

Today’s Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 169, which falls in the ‘poor’ category. This means that there are particles in the air that can affect your health, especially for children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems. Although the air was slightly cleaner in some areas like Defence Colony, the air of the entire city is still ringing alarm bells. There are many reasons for the increasing air pollution in Delhi-NCR – the biggest is vehicle smoke, followed by factory emissions. While rain and strong winds provide some relief, the pollutant particles remain in the air for a longer time due to heat and humidity. In such a situation, there is a need for awareness and small steps, so that Delhi’s air can be breathable again.
