"Bananas spoil so quickly because they continue to ripen rapidly after being harvested," said a representative from Wheeldon Brothers. "But with the right storage methods, you can extend their shelf life significantly and avoid throwing them in the bin prematurely."

Here are three easy strategies to maintain your bananas' firmness, freshness, and colour for longer, reports .

1. Wrap the stems to slow down ripening

The majority of ethylene gas, which promotes ripening, comes from the stems of bananas. Encasing the stems can decelerate this process.

"Wrapping the stems in cling film, foil, or even reusable beeswax wraps reduces the emission of ethylene gas and delays the ripening process," Wheeldon Brothers advised. "It's a simple yet effective trick to prolong the life of your fruit."

If you want your bananas to last longer and stay bruise-free, it's time to rethink how you store them. Firstly, keep bananas away from other fruit, as many emit ethylene gas, which quickens ripening.

2. Hang bananas on a rack to avoid bruising

Secondly, ditch the fruit bowl and hang your bananas on a rack. This prevents bruising caused by hard surfaces or bunching and minimises contact with ethylene.

"Hanging bananas keeps them from bruising and also reduces contact with ethylene, which is heavier than air," explained an expert. "It's a clever way to keep the bananas firmer and more visually appealing for longer."

If you don't have a banana hanger, a simple hook under a cupboard or a hanging fruit basket is just as effective.

3. Refrigerate - despite 'black skin' misconception

The third practical advice involves refrigeration-despite common fears about 'black skin'-it's a myth that cold temperatures ruin bananas.

"There's a misconception that refrigeration ruins bananas," revealed the Wheeldon Brothers. "But it's only the peel that discolours. The fruit inside remains fresh and edible - in fact, refrigeration can help bananas last up to two weeks longer."

Bananas in the fridge should be kept in a paper bag or breathable container to sidestep moisture build-up.
