Instagram has now officially started supporting photos with 3:4 ratio. This is the same format that is the default of most smartphone cameras, meaning now users will not need to crop photos before posting them on Instagram.

So far Instagram only supported photos with 5:4 and 1:1 (square) ratio, but now when you upload a 3:4 ratio photo in a single post or carousel, it will appear in the same format as you took it. This was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri through a post on Threads.

He wrote: "Now if you upload a 3:4 image, it will appear exactly as you took it." Most photos taken from smartphones are in a 3:4 ratio. Earlier they had to be cropped to upload to Instagram. Now you will be able to upload photos directly without any cutting or quality loss.

This feature will work in both single photo posts and carousel posts. An example was also shared on Instagram's broadcast channel showing how much more detail is retained in a 3:4 image compared to a cropped 4:5 image.
