Instagram has been focusing more on Reels and Stories lately, but the meta's most popular platform hasn't forgotten those who love to add photos to their feed. Over the years, Instagram has made its mark by mandating a 1:1 square aspect ratio for photo uploads. While many people love this 1:1 aspect ratio for aesthetics, many users have always complained that they can't upload photos taken with their smartphones as is. It seems Instagram has listened to them.

In a post shared on Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the new 3:4 aspect ratio for photo uploads. This new option will now be enabled by default for all photos that are taken in the 3:4 aspect ratio. Compared to the previous 1:1 square and 4:5 rectangular aspect ratios, the new 3:4 ratio will offer more vertical space. Mosseri “Instagram now supports photos with a 3:4 aspect ratio – the same format that almost every phone camera uses by default. From now on, if you upload a 3:4 image, it will look exactly like you shot it.

3:4 ‘vertical photos’ are here on Instagram
The new 3:4 vertical aspect ratio will apply to both single-photo posts and multi-photo carousel posts. With 1:1 square and 4:5 rectangular photo posts, Instagram says users now have more flexibility to upload their photos the way they like.

The new aspect ratio is part of Instagram’s move to make the platform more vertical content-friendly. Since Reels became a core part of the platform, Instagram has made changes to make the layout more vertical-friendly so that it better fits the dimensions of modern smartphone screens. The profile grid will now display photo and video posts in a vertical position instead of the previous square layout Displays in rectangular slots.
