Lighter fabrics reflect heat more efficiently than darker colours, which makes white more comfortable to wear in summer, however they can also be more difficult to keep . White socks tend to show dirt easily and sweat can often become trapped in the fabric in the hot weather which can show up as big unsightly yellow

However, Jahid Hasan, an expert from , has shared there is a simple way to restore white socks in just one wash, and you do need to spend any money. Jahid said: " juice isn't just for your tea-it's a natural bleach that can make your whites even whiter.

"The citric acid in lemon juice works as a gentle bleaching agent, helping to lift stains and brighten fabrics without the harshness of traditional chemical bleaches."

It may sound strange, but lemon juice is a natural cleaner and is an old-fashioned trick to break down stains on whites without needing harsh chemicals.

Bleach can whiten some laundry stains but it will not work on sweat as the chemicals react to the proteins in the stain which can make it look even worse.

Lemon juice is not only gentle but its acidic properties also help make it antibacterial to help remove any dirt or sweat.

It will remove any yellow stains or grey discolouration so that your socks will look brighter and whiter without much effort.

How to use lemon juice to wash white socks

All you need to do is place 120ml of lemon juice directly into the detergent drawer of your washing machine.

Add your white socks and any other white clothing you want to deep clean. Do not add any dark laundry, as lemon juice naturally lightens fabric and will cause the colours to fade.

Also add your laundry detergent like you normally would. If you wish, add a tablespoon of baking soda to the detergent as well as it helps boost the cleaning effects of lemon juice.

Then, place on a hot wash like normal and then use a rinse cycle to get them clean.

However, once your white socks have been washed make sure to hang them up outside in the sun as ultraviolet light also reacts to lemon juice to help brighten fabric even more.

Jahid said: "The combination of lemon juice and sunlight acts as a powerful natural bleaching duo, enhancing the whitening effect and leaving your clothes looking their best."

Your white socks should look clean, bright and fresh once you take them off the clothing line so you can enjoy the lovely weather without worrying about how to keep your whites looking their best
