transfer target Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike has not been named in France's Under-21 team for the UEFA Under-21 Euros. The 22-year-old had featured prominently in their preparation for the tournament but a back problem has put a halt to his hopes of featuring in the competition.

According to , Ekitike has withdrawn from the tournament as he is currently struggling with a back injury. France medical staff felt that Ekitike would return to full fitness in time to feature doing the opening stages of the tournament.

Ekitike's omission could be a blessing in disguise for his suitors though given that the former Paris Saint-Germain star will be readily available to hold talks over his future, with the striker appearing destined for a Premier League switch over the coming months.

Chelsea are reportedly leading the race for Ekitike as they bid to kickstart the summer transfer window by revamping their frontline significantly. Enzo Maresca's side have made it no secret that they want to sign two strikers before next season, and they are already on the cusp of welcoming Liam Delap to their ranks from Ipswich Town.

The Blues managed to fend off competition from to lure Delap to Stamford Bridge, and they may need to accelerate their talks with Ekitike if they are to ensure that the Frenchman does not head elsewhere.

According to , Chelsea are leading the race to sign the forward and are 'already in dialogue' with his entourage to discuss making the move. Arsenal and Liverpool are also cited as also being interested in Ekitike, though the Blues are considered front-runners to secure his signature.

Liverpool aren't being overlooked in the race though despite their focus being currently on striking a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz. The Reds have tabled two bids for the playmaker so far and are growing in confidence that they can acquire the services of the German international, having already negotiated a deal with the Bundesliga outfit for Jeremie Frimpong. Arne Slot's side are also pressing on in their pursuit of Bournemouth fullback Milos Kerkez.

Chelsea are also in the market for defensive reinforcements, though their priority is bringing in a centre-back, with Jorrel Hato of Ajax and Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite among their top options.
