Chess grandmaster slammed his fist on the table and stormed out of the room in anger after a shock loss to world No. 5 Gukesh Dommaraju at Norway Chess 2025. The looked to be in control during his round six clash against reigning world title holder and chess prodigy Gukesh.
However, a drastic turn in momentum had Carlsen on the ropes. The 34-year-old dropped his knight, and after a clash that had seen 19-year-old phenom Gukesh continuously find moves only to survive, Carlsen resigned. He then slammed his fist on the table in anger at the loss while exclaiming "Oh my god", and storming out of the room, having quickly shaken hands with his opponent.
Despite a staggering 98.7 accuracy from Carlsen, who has tasted victory at this tournament at five of the last six runnings, his opponent prolonged the affair and caught the Norwegian in a time scramble. A match-costing blunder from Carlsen sealed his fate, and Gukesh's first-ever classical win against the impervious world No. 1.
In the aftermath of the victory, Gukesh could be seen shaking as he contemplated the triumph he had just pulled off, and his opponent marched out of the room on the back of his frustrated outburst.
Speaking post-match, Gukesh humbly admitted: "I don't know what happened. There wasn't much I could do. It was just clearly lost... luckily, he got into a time scramble. Ninety-nine out of 100 times, I would lose. I mean, [it was] not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I'll take it," he continued, describing the match and his victory as "just a lucky day."
Gukesh was also asked about Carlsen's slamming of the table, to which he quipped: "I've also banged a lot of tables in my career!"
Fans online weren't so forgiving in light of the grandmaster's actions, with one writing: "Look at the frustration of Carlsen. Never seen such behaviour." While a second exclaimed: "It's high time Carlsen had learnt some manners." And a third added: "He could've just acted well in the spirit of sportsmanship."
Yet, others understood Carlsen's frustrations, with one explaining, "He's been champ for a very long time. His disappointment is understandable. My guess is that Magnus needs this. Champions need to be challenged to keep them sharp."
Another wrote: "I don't understand why so many judgmental comments are being passed against both players. Just enjoy them for what they are!"
Despite it looking at one point in the clash that Carlsen would claim the points, the crosstable now looks wide open after the conclusion of round six. Carlsen remains tied for the lead with Fabiano Caruana on 9.5 points, while Gukesh has ascended to third on 8.5 after his historic win, and remains well within contention.
