IMD Rainfall Report: May 2025 was the coldest and the most rainfed month in India

News India Live, Digital Desk: According to a new report by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), May 2025 will be quite cool than normal, and the average temperature of the day in the country was recorded in the seventh lowest since 1901 and the lowest in the last four years.

The average maximum temperature across India in May was 35.08 degrees Celsius, while the average minimum temperature was 24.07 degrees Celsius – which is the lowest temperature since 1901. The average temperature (29.57 ° C) was also significantly lower, the 19th lowest temperature in recorded history.

Rain breaks a hundred years record

IMD officials credited this unusual cold to continuously cloudy and widespread rainfall throughout the month. The highest average rainfall for this month was recorded in more than a century in May 2025 – 126.7 mm, which is 106.4% of the long -term average. This made it the highest rainfall since the commencement of recordskeeping in 1901.

In addition, extreme weather incidence in the country also saw a rapid growth: 1,053 heavy rainfall incidents (64.5–115.5 mm), 262 very heavy (115.6-204.5 mm) and 39 extremely heavy rainfalls (more than 204.5 mm). In 2021, the number of extreme heavy rainfall incidents was slightly higher i.e. 42.

Many factors behind the fall

According to OP Srijit, head of IMD’s climate monitoring and forecast group, there were three main reasons for unusually humid and cold of May: premature arrival of monsoon, two avadab – one Arabian Sea and one of the Bay of Bengal, and the Western Disturbance (WD).

The temperature was particularly low in Central India, where the average temperature of the day was 36.63 ° C, the third lowest temperature since 1901. Its average minimum temperature was the lowest temperature and the third lowest temperature since the average temperature started.

The frequent presence of western disturbances in north-west India was observed-cyclonic systems coming from the Mediterranean Sea that usually affect the region in winter. According to the Director General of IMD M Mohapatra, his continuous appearance by the end of May has caused acute stormy activity. However, the progress of monsoon has stopped and it is limited to parts of Central and Eastern India.
