Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced that the state government will officially celebrate Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Jayanti on June 27. The decision was made following a preparatory meeting held at Vidhana Soudha, which included the participation of over 150 prominent leaders and stakeholders.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, DCM Shivakumar stated that the gathering saw 60–70 participants offering various suggestions regarding the celebration. “We have finalized June 27 as the date for this year’s celebration,” he confirmed.
As part of the observance, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the same day for the proposed Kempegowda Development Authority office building, which will be constructed on a five-acre site near Sumanahalli. The Deputy CM emphasized that the architectural design of the building will be given high priority.
In addition to the ceremonial events, the government plans to host a state-level award ceremony on the evening of June 27. “We don’t want to limit this celebration to ward-level events,” said Shivakumar. “Like the Rajyotsava Awards, we are considering state-level honors across various fields including sports, literature, art, journalism, industry, and environmental conservation.” A committee will soon be formed to finalize the awards process, he added.
From this year onwards, the Kempegowda Authority will send a tableau to represent Nadaprabhu Kempegowda at the Mysuru Dasara festival every year. The Department of Kannada and Culture will also extend financial support for celebrating Kempegowda Jayanti across all assembly constituencies in the state. Debate competitions and other activities will be organized for school children as part of the celebration.
The Deputy Chief Minister also mentioned that the government will discuss the inclusion of lessons on Kempegowda in school textbooks with the Minister for Primary Education, ensuring that the legacy of the Bengaluru founder is preserved for future generations.
