Ragging Incident Leads to Fines at MKCG Medical College

Berhampur: Two house surgeons at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha have been fined ₹25,000 each following allegations of ragging a fourth-year MBBS student.

The college's anti-ragging committee convened on Monday to address the issue, as confirmed by officials.

MKCG Medical College Principal Suchitra Dash stated, "We received a complaint from the anti-ragging cell regarding the incident that occurred on May 12. A meeting was held to discuss the matter based on these complaints."

After careful deliberation, the committee decided to impose a fine of ₹25,000 on each of the two house surgeons implicated in the case.

Dash further explained that the inquiry revealed the victim was not physically harmed but experienced psychological harassment.

Consequently, the committee opted to penalize the house surgeons named in the complaint for their inappropriate behavior, which violated standards of decency and morality while ragging the junior student within the hostel premises. This action aligns with UGC guidelines, as noted by a committee member.

Additionally, Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M mentioned that a separate police investigation is underway. "A case will be registered if the situation warrants it, in accordance with ragging regulations," he added.
