star Olly Rix has broken his silence about his ignominious departure from BBC long running period drama . The 40-year-old played Matthew Aylward on the show from 2021 until 2024, when his character was unceremoniously dropped from the show with the excuse he was moving to New York. Olly admits he was deeply unhappy with how it ended and the show in general. Speaking exclusively to recently he opened up on his experience.
"That's always one that I find quite difficult to talk about, because it wasn't a happy experience for me. Without wanting to be unprofessional or totally negative it wasn't an experience that I felt was... I don't feel I was treated with a lot of integrity or respect at the end of it," he said. "Obviously, it's commercially, a very successful show, and nobody can take that away from it. But as an actor and as a performer, it was the least interesting or exciting role I'd ever done. I'm not attached to that role or that work in the way I am to anything else," he admitted.
Explaining why he has chosen now to speak out about it the star said: "I just don't want to continue the narrative going forward that [Call The Midwife] is something we hang every article on.
"And I think, you know, [I'm doing] Casualty. [They're] trying to sort of reinvent the show and embrace the fact that the show is moving into a new era with the 40th anniversary on the cards - they are looking to that next year.
"And my coming on board with the show was a big part of that, and something that I'm going to be heavily involved in and I'm excited about that, and also other work outside the show."
Olly is currently appearing in Casualty on BBC One playing Clinical Lead Flynn Byron. Although only on screens since March he has been working on the show for a year now.
has contacted the BBC for comment.
However they have previously issued a statement to expressing their disappointment at Olly's remarks.
"We don't accept this. Call the Midwife is a drama that prides itself on providing a supportive, inclusive and nurturing filming environment, and we are known for the family atmosphere on our set.
"Series 15 is currently filming and we look forward to sharing this exciting new series with our beloved audience," they wrote.
