Mamta Pathak, a 65-year-old former chemistry professor, has sparked national attention after a video of her arguing her own legal case in the Madhya Pradesh High Court went viral. Convicted in 2022 for the murder of her husband, government doctor Neeraj Pathak, Mamta is currently out on bail and has chosen to defend herself in her appeal.

In the widely shared courtroom video, Mamta is seen confidently presenting her argument before the Jabalpur Bench. Wearing a plain white sari, she questioned the postmortem findings, stating that it is not scientifically possible to confirm electrocution as the cause of death without proper chemical analysis. When the judge asked about her background, she replied that she was a former chemistry professor.

The case dates back to April 2021, when Dr. Neeraj Pathak was found dead at their residence in Chhatarpur. According to the postmortem, the cause of death was electrocution. Police alleged that Mamta had given her husband sleeping pills before electrocuting him. They also cited her suspicious behavior, including leaving for her son's dialysis treatment the next morning without informing anyone of the death.

Mamta was arrested soon after the incident. In 2022, a sessions court found her guilty under Section 302 of the IPC (murder) and sentenced her to life imprisonment. In 2023, she was granted bail by the High Court while her appeal is pending.

Police also submitted an audio clip in the charge sheet, which reportedly features Neeraj expressing concern about threats from his wife. Investigators said Mamta suspected him of having an extramarital affair. She had filed a complaint in January 2021 accusing him of mixing pills in her food, though she later withdrew it.

Currently, Mamta is representing herself in the appeal. The High Court bench, comprising Justices Vivek Agarwal and Devnarayan Mishra, has reserved its judgment after hearing her arguments.
