Manchester United have been warned off attempting to secure a bargain deal for Bryan Mbeumo, with Brentford demanding over £60million for the forward. The Red Devils have identified Cameroon international Mbeumo as their second summer acquisition, having already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves for a hefty £62.5m after activating his release clause.
However, Brentford reportedly value Mbeumo at the same price tag as Cunha and won't settle for anything less if they are to part ways with him this summer. It's also suggested that Brentford are prepared to wait until the transfer deadline day on 1st September if it means United meeting their asking price for the 25-year-old Mbeumo.
The Bees are in no rush to offload Mbeumo, given they have the option to extend his current contract, which has one more season left. With this in mind, they are unperturbed about Mbeumo's situation, putting the ball firmly in United's court to match their valuation if they genuinely want the player.
United's pursuit of Mbeumo is further complicated by interest from Saudi Pro League clubs in his Brentford teammate and fellow forward Yoane Wissa, aged 28. Brentford are reluctant to lose both Mbeumo and Wissa this summer, implying that if the latter secures a lucrative move to a Saudi club, United could miss out on the former if they dawdle.
Ruben Amorim, the United boss, is certain that Mbeumo, who netted 20 goals and provided eight assists last season for Brentford, would be a perfect match for his 3-4-3 formation.
Amorim envisions Cunha and Mbeumo flanking a striker, with captain Bruno Fernandes - who has pledged his loyalty to United after rejecting a move to Saudi - playing in a more defensive position.
Mbeumo's adaptability is one of the reasons Amorim is so eager to acquire him, as the forward can play in various positions across the front line, including on the right and as a striker.
His speed, both with and without the ball, combined with his ability to create and finish opportunities effectively, are attributes United desperately need, as the responsibility fell squarely on Fernandes last season.
