's dad, , is said to be having a hard time adjusting to life in the Philippines after leaving behind his cliffside home in Mexico in search of a fresh start. The 80-year-old former Hollywood lighting director - and estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex - moved to the bustling island of Cebu earlier this year with his son, Thomas Jr. At the time, insiders claimed the move was a last-ditch attempt to escape the "awful drama of recent years."
Thomas had lived for more than a decade in Rosarito, a coastal town near the US border, but opted for a drastic lifestyle change in 2024. After briefly staying at a three-star hotel, he moved into a high-rise apartment costing just $670 (£493) a month.
But the new beginning has reportedly been far tougher than expected. A source told "Thomas and his son took the plunge and moved to Southeast Asia. It's been hard but they have each other."
The duo only recently settled into their apartment, but locals say Thomas Sr. appears to be struggling with the intense climate and cultural shift.
A source told last month: "There are only two types of weather in Cebu: hot and humid, and hot and humid and raining. It's brutal even for men half his age, but it's still sad to see him looking as though he's struggling."
Now relying on a cane to get around the island's uneven streets, the regional Emmy winner is said to be trying to stay positive despite the difficulties.
His new home is over 7,000 miles away from Meghan, Prince Harry, and his grandchildren Archie, 6, and Lilibet, who just turned 4 on June 4.
But reconciliation seems unlikely - Thomas has not spoken to Meghan since 2018, and he has reportedly never met his grandchildren. It is understood their relationship broke down before Meghan's wedding to , and only worsened after Thomas suffered a stroke in 2022.
Before leaving Mexico, he told the he was ready to explore a new chapter in Southeast Asia, calling it a "place of culture and beauty."
He told the outlet: "I am ready for a change. I have felt stuck in a rut for some time and I am ready to meet new people and experience kindness." He added that he hoped to find a more "peaceful" environment far from the headlines and heartbreak.
Despite no contact with Meghan, Thomas has continued to express his desire to see Archie and Lilibet. In April 2023, he issued a public plea from his sickbed to reconnect with his daughter - but it too was met with silence.
"I'm not running away. I am going in search of a more positive life," he said of his move in January. "Every day I see something about Meghan. I wish her no ill will. My dream is that one day I could bring my whole family together, like a 'normal' family."
