New Delhi: Mahindra have outsold their rival Tata Motors in the passenger vehicle sales chart in May 2025. Mahindra, in their regulatory filing, have said that it sold 52,431 units in the Indian market compared to Tata’s 41,557 units recorded last month. It has been a second consecutive month that Mahindra have been ahead of Tata in terms of sales.
By numbers, Mahindra has recorded 21 per cent year-on-year growth in their passenger vehicle sales. For Tata Motors, the monthly sales recorded a 12.7 per cent decline. According to Vahan’s report, both Tata and Hyundai have been struggling against Mahindra’s SUV segment.
This position showcases Mahindra’s remarkable success in capturing the SUV boom that the country has been experiencing. The company has managed to keep a very focused strategy on utility vehicles, increasing their domestic volume far more than their Korean competition.
Hyundai, though, reclaimed the third place in India’s domestic passenger vehicle market in May 2025, ending a three-month streak where it had been placed behind Mahindra and Tata since February. It is a slight relief for the Korean car manufacturers, who have usually held the second place in the Indian vehicle market. With 43,861 domestic units sold, Hyundai managed to stay ahead of Tata by just 2000-plus units, a comparatively low margin. The competition in the Indian market remains high, with Maruti Suzuki’s top spot remaining one of the constants for a long time.
Hyundai, though, managed to maintain the second spot when the domestic sales were added to the export volumes, with the sales reaching 58,701 units, while Mahindra stayed with 54,819 units. Hyundai in total made an export of 14,840 units in May, showcasing the big role that the manufacturing hub for the global market, taking the full advantage of the Chennai facility. Despite the domestic market pressure, the export strength has helped Hyundai maintain their market position.
