The religious significance of Nirjala Ekadashi?
Acharya Anand Bhardwaj said that by just fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi, one gets the fruits of fasting on all the Ekadashis of the year including the two Ekadashis of Adhik Maas. While dietary restraint is important in other Ekadashi fasts throughout the year, on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, along with food, and water restraint is also necessary. Water is not consumed in this fast, that is, the fast is observed by remaining without water. This fast teaches restraint to the mind. It gives new energy to the body. Both men and women can observe this fast.
What not to do on the day of the Ekadashi fast?
According to religious beliefs, cutting hair or nails on a holy day like Nirjala Ekadashi is considered forbidden. It is believed that doing so can anger Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. This can lead to loss of wealth, intelligence, and knowledge in life. It is also mentioned in the Anushasana Parva of Mahabharata that cutting hair on auspicious dates is inauspicious and can harm the person. Therefore, it would be better to get a hair cut a day or two before the fast.
