The central government has issued a clear timeline for the much-awaited census and caste census process in the country. According to the information given by the Home Ministry, the process of Census 2027 will officially start from June 16, 2025 and it will be completed by March 1, 2027. The government will publish the notification related to census and caste census in the Official Gazette on June 16, 2025. This day will be considered the official start of the census process across the country.

The census work in Himalayan and snowy areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be completed by 1 October 2026. In view of the weather related difficulties in these areas, the census will be completed in the first phase.

The work of census and caste enumeration in other states and union territories of the country will be completed by March 1, 2027, and it will be officially published on the same day.

Thus, this biggest census exercise of India will be completed in about 21 months, which will start on June 16, 2025 and end on March 1, 2027.

Under this census, not only population but information on ethnic identity as well as socio-economic status will be collected. In this, information on residential pattern of the family, vehicle, property, education, drinking water, toilet and other basic facilities will also be taken through digital medium. This time the census will not only be digital and fast, but it will also present the most comprehensive data set to understand the socio-economic fabric of India.

There was a long standing demand for caste census in the country, and after the final approval, now its date has also been revealed. After independence, the census has been conducted seven times from 1951 to 2011 and a total of 15 times in India. There has been no caste census in India since 1931. After 94 years, the Modi government has decided to conduct caste census.
