Jorhat, June 5: A shocking incident has emerged from Dhemaji district, where a group of YouTubers filmed themselves committing acts of violence against wild birds, sharing the footage on their channel to attract more viewers.
This cruel act coincided with World Environment Day, highlighting a disturbing lack of respect for wildlife and environmental conservation.
In response to the incident, local authorities swiftly apprehended three suspects—Munindra Mushahari, Maheswar Swargiyari, and Shivaram Swargiyari—who are currently in police custody.
The events unfolded in the Simen Chapori region, specifically within the bird habitats of Hastinapur and Kordoiguri villages, areas known for their diverse avian population, including the Lesser Whistling Duck (Xorali Haah) and various migratory birds.
Forest Officer Krishnakamal Deuri expressed his dismay, stating, “It was heartbreaking to witness such videos, especially on World Environment Day. We took immediate action upon receiving the information and coordinated with the police to ensure the culprits were caught.”
A case has been filed under the Wildlife Protection Act, with potential penalties for the accused ranging from three to seven years in prison if found guilty.
Equipped with slingshots and other implements, the individuals killed numerous birds and stole hundreds of eggs from their nests.
They documented their actions and uploaded the content to their YouTube channel, Jakrub, which had amassed a considerable following. The channel featured 33 videos, many showcasing similar acts of cruelty. Although the videos have since been removed, the forest department has retained copies for evidence.
The incident has ignited widespread outrage, prompting environmental advocates and the public to call for harsher penalties and increased monitoring of online platforms that host or promote such illegal and unethical activities.
