Tom Felton, known globally for portraying Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series, is stepping back into the wizarding world — but in a brand-new way.
The 37-year-old actor has announced that he will reprise his iconic role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, marking his stage debut at New York City’s Lyric Theatre this fall.
Felton revealed the news on the Today show on June 5 — a date that holds extra significance for Harry Potter fans, as it is Draco Malfoy’s birthday in the books. This timely announcement thrilled longtime followers of the franchise and added a nostalgic touch to Felton’s return.
Felton’s casting is a milestone for the Broadway production. He is officially the first actor from the original Harry Potter films to take on a role in Cursed Child, which debuted on Broadway in 2018. “It’s very much a pinch-me situation,” Felton said, adding that he never imagined revisiting Draco 16 years after the final film.
Set nearly two decades after the conclusion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Cursed Child explores the lives of the next generation of Hogwarts students — including Draco’s son, Scorpius. Felton admitted that playing a grown-up Draco is both a new and daunting experience, saying, “We actually are the parents now… it’s treading into unfamiliar territory.”
Felton confessed that stepping back into Draco’s persona was unexpectedly emotional. “When they put my blond wig on for the theater production, I just immediately cried,” he said. The transformation triggered deep memories from his youth spent filming the original movies.
Tom Felton will take over the role from Aaron Bartz and perform as Draco Malfoy from November 11, 2025, to March 22, 2026. The Broadway production has been streamlined into a single performance running under three hours. It continues to be a major draw at the Lyric Theatre.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. With Felton’s highly anticipated stage debut, the play is likely to attract even more fans eager to see a beloved character brought to life by the actor who originally played him.
