MBBS seats have doubled from 51,348 to more than 1.18 lakh. The 130% increase under PM Modi's youth-first approach has opened more avenues for service and treatment.

Under the 11 years of the Modi government, India has seen unprecedented progress in the field of medical education. The youth-first policies of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have more than doubled the number of MBBS seats in the country. There were 51,348 seats for MBBS in the country in the year 2014. Which the Modi government has more than doubled in its 11-year tenure. So far, there are 1,18,190 MBBS seats in our country. From the year 2014 to 2024, the total MBBS seats have increased by 130%. This achievement of the Modi government is not only helping to advance medical education but also strengthening the healthcare sector of the country. Due to which lakhs of youth are getting the opportunity to become doctors and serve the society.

Major achievement of the government in medical education

Before 2014, the limited availability of medical education in India was a big challenge. At that time only 51,348 MBBS seats were available, while lakhs of students wished to pursue medical education through entrance examinations like NEET. More than 24 lakh students had registered for NEET UG in 2024. Which shows a huge gap between the shortage of seats and the number of students taking the entrance exam. To bridge this gap, the central government paid special attention to the increase in the number of medical colleges and seats through various schemes.

Medical PG seats also increased

By 2025, the number of MBBS seats has reached 1,18,190, including 423 government and 343 private medical colleges. Apart from this, the number of postgraduate (PG) seats has also increased by 138% to 74,306. The Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) has contributed significantly to this expansion.

Target of 75,000 new seats

The central government had announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 that 75,000 new medical seats would be added in the next five years. Under this target, 10,000 additional seats have been added in 2025 itself. This move will not only increase access to medical education but will also reduce the number of Indian students going abroad for medical education. Education experts say that this move is an important step towards making India self-reliant in the field of medical education.
