Two major private banks of the country – HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank – are going to make major changes in their credit card rules from 1 July. These changes will affect millions of customers, especially those who use online payment, gaming apps, wallet top-ups or airport lounge facilities.
HDFC Bank: Gaming and wallet transactions will be charged new charge
HDFC Bank has announced to implement several new charges for its credit card users:
1% charge on gaming
If a customer spends more than ₹ 10,000 a month on online gaming platforms like Dream11, MPL, Junglee Games or Rummyculture, then he will have to pay 1% of the total expenditure. However, this charge will be limited to maximum ₹ 4,999.
Wallet top-up fee
In third-party wallets like Paytm, Mobikwik, Freecharge, or Ola Money, the same will apply the same 1% charge on top-up more than ₹ 10,000 from HDFC credit card.
Fee on utility bill
If utility payment (eg electricity, water, gas bills etc.) is more than ₹ 50,000, then 1% transaction charge will be charged on it. However, insurance payment will be outside this scope.
Rent, fuel and education transactions
The upper limit of charge in these categories has also been fixed at ₹ 4,999 per transaction.
ICICI Bank: New Conditions on Lounge Access and Banking Service
ICICI Bank has also made some major changes in its credit card rules, including:
New condition of lounge access
Now only those customers will be able to avail free airport lounge access, who have spent ₹ 75,000 or more with their ICICI credit card in the previous quarter (3 months).
Service charge on cash and check deposits
Now if ICICI customers make cash deposits, check, or demand draft (DD) / pay order (PO) in the bank, then they have to pay additional charge:
₹ 2 fee at every ₹ 1000
Charge will be applicable to minimum ₹ 50 and maximum ₹ 15,000
Charge on ATM Transaction
After 3 free transactions every month:
₹ 23 on Financial Transaction
₹ 8.50 on Non-Financial Transaction
Get ready before change
The new rules of these two banks will be applicable from 1 July 2025.
