Former South African captain Graeme Smith is fully supportive of the national team as they prepare for a crucial challenge in the World Test Championship against Australia, the reigning champions, at the historic Lord's venue on Wednesday.
South Africa has had multiple opportunities to secure an ICC title but has yet to succeed. This final presents another chance for them to break their trophy drought. Australia, currently ranked as the top Test team, is considered the favorite in this high-stakes match.
Despite the challenges facing the Proteas, Smith has called for fans to rally behind captain Temba Bavuma and his team as they aim to upset the Australians and deny them the chance to take home the WTC mace.
"We are fully behind Temba and the squad. As the last captain to hold the mace at Lord's in 2012, it would bring me immense joy to see Temba and this group lift it. All South Africans should come together to support the team in this vital mission," Smith stated in a video shared by the league on YouTube.
Lord's is particularly significant for Smith, as he led the Proteas to the number one Test ranking following a thrilling match against England there in 2012. That match concluded with a nail-biting 51-run victory for South Africa on the final day.
"Lord's is a truly remarkable venue. From my childhood watching South African teams play there, I have always had positive memories. It's essential to embrace the atmosphere as you prepare for your matches. Walking down the stairs through the Members' stands and stepping out to a full house at Lord's is an unmatched experience," he shared.
"It's a feeling that gives you goosebumps, one of those unforgettable moments in your career. Personally, my first visit in 2003, where I scored a double century and Makhaya took 10 wickets, remains an incredible memory of Lord's," he reminisced.
