One man visited the UK's "worst" seaside town and there were many things that he wasn't impressed by, but he's not sure that it lives up to its infamous title. Bangor in North Wales was last year and was slammed for its "drab" and "run down" appearance. The town, which is home to just 16,000 people, took the title of the worst seaside town in the UK in a Which? Travel survey, receiving just one-star ratings for food and drink, tourist attractions and shopping.
It also scored low in categories such as value for money and quality of beaches. One YouTube creator took it upon himself to see whether or not the town deserved . Ed Chapman shared a video of his findings, taking viewers along with him as he explored the town and the things to do there. In his video, he points out a number of surprising aspects of the town and surrounding area, with two standing out to viewers.
The first one, which he shows at the start of the video, is the beach and promenade which leaves much to be desired. "That's ," he says as he shows viewers what he's seeing. "It looks more like a swamp down there."
However, there were positive parts of his time there that he shared in the video. One of them, which seemed to surprise the YouTuber, is how much fun he had on a speed boat tour of the waters surrounding Bangor. He revealed that he enjoyed the nice scenery as well as the banter with the boat's driver.
While others are in agreement about Bangor's position as the UK's worst seaside town, others, such as locals, . One person took to the comments section of the YouTube video to share: "I'm Bangor born and bred. We are NOT a 'seaside town' and have never been one."
They continued: "We are a very small university city beside the sea. We are not geared up to be a seaside town - that's places like Llandudno and . We've never had a sandy beach and they are shoring up the sea defences down there atm [at the moment], which is a massive job. Bangor is the gateway to ."
Another person said: "Not only is Bangor NOT the worst seaside town; it appears to be one of the nicer ones. Of course the town centre is 'dead'. The majority of Britain's town centres are now, in case nobody noticed? At least you didn't see any chavs knocking about there, Ed."
A third commented: "North Wales is one of the best places for a holiday in the UK, assuming you have a car. The mountains of Snowdonia, stunning medieval town walls and castle in Conwy, beautiful sandy beaches and red squirrels in Anglesey."
Although Bangor was named the worst seaside town in the UK, there are still planty of top-rated attractions located around it. On Tripadvisor, reviewers have had overwhelmingly positive things to say about Penrhyn Castle, Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve and the pier in Bangor.
By the end of his video, Chapman isn't wholly convinced that Bangor deserves the title of the UK's worst seaside town. However, some people think it is just that.
One local told in 2024: "It's a s***hole. It's gone downhill massively for years. It's a dump in the city centre." Another said: "It's been declining for 20 years. It's a shame it has gone downhill."
A third shared: "It seems run down. There's nothing here. To think it's a university city, you'd expect there would be more commerce here."
