New Delhi: Kamal Haasan-Starrer Thug Life was released in theatres on June 5, and despite various controversies, the movie witnessed a good start at the box office. In spite of facing a ban in Karnataka, the movie has performed well in other parts of the country.
The much-awaited movie also marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after 36 years of their cult classic Nayakan. The two-hour and forty-six-minute movie also includes music by Oscar-winning artist A.R. Rehman.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie Thug Life minted Rs 15.5 crore on its first day of theatrical release in India. Out of the total domestic box office earnings, Rs 15.4 crore came from Tamil shows, followed by Rs 1.5 crores from Telugu screenings and Rs 10 lakh from Hindi shows.
The movie screened in about 2,220 theaters overseas amid the controversies. At the same time, the movie saw a 52.06 percent occupancy in Tamil and a 5.79 percent occupancy in Hindi for the 2D version. In comparison, an overall occupancy rate of 34.63% was registered in Tamil for the IMAX 2D version.

The movie is made on a massive budget of Rs 180 crore, and the first day earnings have covered its marketing cost. But despite getting good earnings from the box office on day one, the movie’s reviews from fans are not welcoming, The film is receiving more criticism than praise. Some fans wrote that the movie had nothing new to show, and repetition from old movies was seen in it.
Viewers are regretting watching the movie, calling it the worst movie ever watched in the theater. Some are saying that it’s high time Mani Ratnam should retire, as the movie was visually rich but creatively bankrupt.
Talking about the star cast, the movie stars Kamal Haasan alongside T.R. Silambarasan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Trisha Krishnan, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar in pivotal roles.
