Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebutt had to intervene and welcome an "unexpected" guest after Downton Abbey star Matthew Goode's wife, Sophie Dymoke, suddenly joined the show.

As the programme returned from a segment featuring comedian Katherine Ryan, who enjoyed a poached egg dish, viewers were surprised to see Sophie seated next to her renowned husband.

Ignoring the unusual addition to the table, the host proceeded to chat with the actor about his culinary likes and dislikes. Addressing the elephant in the room, he briefly interrupted the broadcast, commenting: "Before we find out [food heaven or hell] somebody's just joined our table," which was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Sophie, now in the spotlight, gestured with her hands and admitted to the audience, "Unexpected. " Her husband humorously introduced her using Borat's catchphrase, "My wife," prompting laughter throughout the studio,

The show's host then turned to Sophie, asking: "How are you, Sophie? Are you pleased we pulled you in?"

With a mixture of surprise and amusement, she replied: "Yeah, sort of. It was unexpected for sure." Noticing her discomfort at being on camera, Matt enquired: "Are you a bit nervous?"

Matthew interjected with a playful comment: "It's lovely to have the shoe on the other foot," to which Sophie playfully retorted: "I'll never tell him off again."

Curious about their family's reaction, Matt asked: "Are your kids watching this?" Sophie answered with slight hesitation: "Yes, they are."

The presenter cheerfully urged: "They are, well, say hello," while she gestured towards the camera with a friendly wave, adding: "Hello, Matilda, Teddy, and Ralph."

The atmosphere took a slightly awkward turn as fellow guests in the studio filled the silence with a chorus of "ahh's" while the host playfully warned the trio of children: "They'll now be mortified."

Following the introductions, it became clear that the BBC host had slipped up. Eager to press on with the programme, Matt had already begun whipping up the Netflix star's 'food heaven' dish before confirming the audience's choice.

With a grin, he admitted: "Right, so heaven or hell.... I'm kind of cooking it, so that's already given it away." Revealing the results, he continued: "74 percent of people went for heaven," as he stepped back from the monkfish he was preparing.

Matt and his wife Sophie expressed their gratitude with a heartfelt "Thank you so much," as the presenter emphasised: "A very big vote today and not just about the food."

Saturday Kitchen airs each Saturday on BBC One, from 10am.
